The Belgian MEP retweeted a video originally posted by a courier showing huge queues of lorries into Dover. In a dig at Brexit, arch-Europhile Mr Verhofstadt said: “The British might be good at queuing….
“But what use is a trade deal with Australia compared to the mess Brexit created for the export of goods to your neighbours?”
However, Mr Verhofstadt’s tweet prompted a cross reaction from some Twitter users.
One with the handle @ThornStinger wrote: “Still ranting about Brexit? Move on Guy.”
Another, @BillyRe22192649, commented: “Aww are you missing us Guy? Well the feelings not mutual.”
A third user with the handle @JamesOl27927391 said: “Oh Guy…Still upset?”
Another, @jmichotte2000, wrote: “Aren’t you bitter. Get over it.”
A fifth user, @guytric, added: “Why do you care Guy? Move on.”
Another, @LordCLQTR, blasted: “I’d rather trade with the Australians and queue a bit, than help prop up your failing EU club.”

Another person with the handle @BruceChico1 wrote: “It’s created a mess for all of us. Our right place is with neighbours in the EU.”
A third @malstone commented: “And for what benefit? Brexit was a madness.”
Mr Verhofstadt’s tweet comes after a courier blamed extra controls which have come into force post-Brexit on the queues.
They told the Independent: “It’s entirely Brexit – you can’t blame it on anything else but Brexit.
“People will get to grips with Goods Vehicle Movement Service (GVMS) and the new paperwork in the weeks ahead.
“But even if they don’t take as long, checks still take time.
“So the queues are bound to get worse when traffic flows pick up next month.”
