Chelsea signing Christopher Nkunku should strike fear into the hearts of Man City

Chelsea’s pursuit of Christopher Nkunku will strike fear into the Manchester City squad after the Frenchman scored a hat-trick for RB Leipzig against the Sky Blues in their Champions League fixture last year. Reports have suggested that the player has agreed personal terms to become one of new boss Graham Potter’s first signings, in the summer of 2023, with the Blues having a bid worth in excess of £52.7million accepted by the Bundesliga side.

The move for Nkunku appears to have been in the pipeline for some time with reports in Germany last Friday stating the player had completed a secret medical with the west London side. This now seems to have progressed to a deal being completed, with the 24-year-old said to have agreed personal terms over a pre-contract for 2023.

The France international is considered to be one of the best players in the German top-flight and can play in a range of attacking positions including as a No 10 and upfront.  He has scored 55 goals in 148 appearances for Leipzig and has also contributed 48 assists since his arrival from PSG in 2019. He has been on top form so far this season, finding the net six times already, putting him second in the Bundesliga scoring charts.

Manchester City saw his quality first-hand in the Champions League last season with the forward netting a hat trick at the Eithad during a 6-3 defeat for the German side. There will be fears he could do the same again once he joins Chelsea given the Sky Blues’ struggles to contain him on his last visit.

Pep Guardiola’s men have also been showing some defensive frailties this season despite their impressive start to the campaign. They have conceded nine times in their opening eight matches with both Newcastle and Manchester United finding the net on three separate occasions.

Nkunku was once again on form this weekend as he played an integral role in Leipzig’s 4-0 win over VfL Bochum. The Frenchman scored twice from attacking midfield with former Chelsea star Timo Werner bagging the other two. The result was enough to take the side to 11th in the Bundesliga as they looked to arrest a dire start to the campaign which saw them ship 12 goals in their opening seven matches.

They are also languishing at the bottom of their Champions League group having lost to Real Madrid and Shakhtar Donetsk. They take on Celtic at home tomorrow as they seek to try and kickstart their push for the group stages.

It remains to be seen whether or not Nkunku’s move to Stamford Bridge will be made official however City are likely to be monitoring the situation closely given the damage he caused against them last year.
