England hero David Seaman says Southgate has overlooked 'perfect' John Stones replacement

England and Arsenal legend David Seaman believes that Ben White would be a ‘perfect’ candidate to slot in on the right side of a back three for the Three Lions, despite being left out of the latest squad. Gareth Southgate could need reinforcements in that position after John Stones trudged off injured against Germany on Monday evening.

Many were surprised to see the likes of Harry Maguire and Conor Coady called up in place of White, who has been a regular fixture at Arsenal since completing a £50million move from Brighton last summer.

Recently, the 24-year-old has been forced to show his versatility as William Saliba’s impact at centre-back has forced Gunners boss Mikel Arteta to move him out to right full-back. White is also able to play in central defence or in the middle of the park, but that still wasn’t enough to persuade Southgate this time around.

His exclusion came as a surprise to England hero Seaman who, in conversation with Express Sport, claims that White’s skill set makes him the ideal player to feature in a back three.

“I would imagine it would be Dean Henderson [that drops out] because he’s only just started playing again with Forest,” added Seaman. “Pickford is the number one because he’s never let England down. At the end of last season, he showed why he’s England’s No 1 because at Everton, he made some massive saves under big pressure.

“Jordan is, by far, the number one because he’s got the experience of the World Cup, the Euros final and he’s still playing well. Then it’s a battle to be number two, for me I’d go with Aaron. Nick Pope has gone to Newcastle and he’s a really good goalkeeper.”

Alongside coaching Arsenal’s young goalkeepers, Seaman stars alongside fellow England legend Paul Gascoigne in a newly-released YouTube fishing show, produced by Fishing Republic, which can be seen here. “It was great to get Gazza out,” he said. “He loves his fishing.

“We’ve been fishing together for a long time. We’ve been on England duty, he’s fallen in lakes, we’ve chased photographers away. I just wanted people to see the side to him that I see quite a lot – a Gazza that enjoys getting out there and not acting up all the time, just being normal.”

The former Gunners stopper has also interviewed Gazza, along with the likes of Glenn Hoddle and Gary Lineker, on his podcast, Seaman Says.
