Girl has 'head stomped on' as lawless teenagers brawl in city centre

Horrified onlookers in Coventry city centre on Saturday said the violent youths were seen “slapping” and “punching” one another before the girl fell to the ground. One witness said it appeared as if she then a seizure on the floor.

That woman said the fracas “quickly escalated” and she feared for the girl’s life.

Speaking to Coventry Live, she said: “Town was busy, as it always is on a Saturday evening. There are two groups of girls, mostly teens, and a verbal altercation begins.

“It quickly escalates to slaps and punches and at this point, a girl falls to the ground and without hesitation another girl stamps on the side of her head.

“I ran over to see if I could offer assistance and started telling people to call an ambulance and police.

“I was so worried for her health because an impact like that could be fatal. She was unconscious on the floor and some members of the public put her in the recovery position, and at this point, I notice her movements become jagged and people are trying to keep her still.

“I felt my heart sink, it appeared as if she had a seizure. She was still for a moment and bouncers from the nearby pubs ushered people away and broke up the remaining fights.

“The girl woke up very disoriented and needed help coordinating her movements. She was taken from the area up Well Street to sit on a wall.”

West Midlands Ambulance Service was called to the scene just before 7pm.

Fortunately, the girl’s injuries were minor and she appeared to recover thanks to the help of the public.

But the witness, who had been waiting for a bus, said: “I personally felt very uneasy during and after the whole thing, where I felt unsafe on the streets and had to call my friend to make me feel more comfortable.”

A spokesman for West Midlands Ambulance Service said: “We were called at 6:57pm on Saturday (April 16) to reports of an assault in The Burges. However, no patient was found and we were stood down.”

West Midlands Police have been approached for comment.
