'It's a shame' Outlander's Caitriona Balfe admits show request 'falling on deaf ears'

Caitriona Balfe and Sam Heughan will be returning to screens in just under two months’ time for the long-anticipated sixth season of Outlander. Although the continuing Starz drama promises more thrills and delights to come, the actress best known as time-traveller Claire Fraser wasn’t 100 per cent satisfied by her recent time on-set.

The Irish star has recently expressed her wish to eventually direct an episode of her hit series, Outlander.

In 2014, she began leading the sweeping historical drama as WWII nurse Claire, who is sent back in time to 18th Century Scotland.

From there, the series, based on Diana Gabaldon’s already internationally popular novels, has become a major hit and will soon return for its sixth season.

Unfortunately, Caitriona’s request to work behind-the-scenes for one of the new episodes was once again unsuccessful.

“It’s something I’ve been talking about doing on the show,” she told Variety. “It’s falling a little on deaf ears.”

Both Caitriona and Sam work as producers on the series, so they do have some sway over how their iconic characters’ journey will play out on screen.

However, the actress still longs to direct at some point, an aim which was sadly put on hold by the strains of the Covid pandemic.

Outlander underwent a reduced season order this time round to ensure the cast could stay as safe as possible during the shoot in Scotland.

During the show’s lengthy delay during the pandemic, Starz assured fans Outlander would indeed eventually be returning for a seventh, extended season.

However, season eight is not yet guaranteed, though it could finally provide the perfect opportunity for Caitriona to get behind the camera.

Moreover, the actress has recently had the opportunity to watch one of Hollywood’s leading filmmakers, Kenneth Branagh, at work after starring in the acclaimed drama, Belfast.

Caitriona spoke to him about her goals on the set of the film, and the director expressed an interest in being her mentor.

“I personally would be really fascinated to see her direct,” he said.

“Because that compassionate emotional intelligence and genuine, significant intellect – I think will also be a great storytelling voice to see in the future.”

Whether on a future episode of Outlander or her own feature films, hopefully, Caitriona’s dreams of directing will eventually become a reality.

Outlander season 6 will premiere on Sunday, March 6 on Starz in the US and Starzplay in the UK.
