Lewis Hamilton blanks Micah Richards in brutal Singapore snub – 'Thought we were friends'

Speaking after the session, Hamilton said: “I was pushing so hard and it was incredibly close. It was really difficult to get to a position where we could be fighting for first place and I just didn’t have enough grip on the last lap.

“Coming here, we didn’t know how close we could be this weekend. We knew we’d be stronger than in Monza, but we didn’t know exactly how much. Nonetheless, I am grateful to be on the second row tomorrow. And I’m thankful to the team for continuing to push. We just keep our head down and hope for a positive day tomorrow.”

Hamilton’s team-mate George Russell struggled in the rain and was knocked out in the second part of qualifying. Mercedes have fitted him with new engine components ahead of the race meaning he will start from the pitlane.

Hamilton is 35 points behind team-mate Russell but could slash the advantage this afternoon.
