Liz Truss and Danish Prime Minister agree Nord Stream pipe damage is 'act of sabotage'

Liz Truss and the Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen have agreed that the damage to the Nord Stream 1 and 2 pipelines were an “clearly an act of sabotage”. The pipelines are currently leaking natural gas into the Baltic Sea near Denmark and Sweden.

The two Prime Ministers agreed that safety in the Baltic Sea was in “everyone’s interest” and welcomed increased support through an expeditionary force.

Ms Truss also offered the UK’s support in the ongoing investigation into the leaks.

Four leaks have been detected in the pipelines, two in Sweden’s exclusive economic zone while the other two are in Danish waters.

NATO and the EU have called the damage, first discovered on Monday, September 26, an act of sabotage.

Bjorn Lund, a seismologist with Uppsala University, told broadcaster SVT: “There is no doubt that these were explosions.”

In response, Norway has vowed that its military will be more visible around energy infrastructure including oil and gas installations.

The pipes were not pumping gas to Europe at the time of the explosions. The United Nations Environment Programme said on Friday the leaks had resulted in what was likely the “biggest-ever” release of methane.

If the damage is attributed to Moscow, it will come as part of Putin’s strategy to remind Europe of Russia’s energy dominance over the continent.

Already, Germany is rationing energy in order to stave off winter shortages. Lights at monuments have been turned off while hot water usage in public buildings has been limited.

However, it is proving to be too little too late – this week German energy regulator Federal Network Agency said household gas consumption in Germany was too high to “avoid an emergency situation this winter.”

Russia has said that the leaks occurred in territory “fully under the control” of US intelligence agencies, without providing any evidence to support the claim.

Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova told the pro-Kremlin Soloviev Live online broadcast: “It happened in the trade and economic zones of Denmark and Sweden. There are NATO-centric countries. They are countries that are completed controlled by the U.S. intelligence services.”
