Manchester United face paying Cristiano Ronaldo lucrative bonus due to contract clause

Cristiano Ronaldo will be encouraged about the chances of winning trophies this season after Manchester United’s recent upturn in form — but it could come at a cost for the club as he eyes a £3million payday. The Portuguese superstar is already the highest earner at the club, and he could be set to land a giant payment if Man United finish the season with silverware in Europe.

Ronaldo signed a two-year deal with the Red Devils when sealing his £12m return for a second stint at Old Trafford — 12 years after leaving for Real Madrid in a world-record £80m switch.

The 36-year-old is reportedly paid a basic salary of around £475,000-a-week, which represents a significant reduction on his wage packet when he was at Madrid and Juventus.

Ronaldo earned an eye-watering £900k-a-week during his three years with Juve and exceeded the £1m-a-week barrier with the Spanish giants.

But according to The Daily Star, he compromised in order to get the deal over the line, instead agreeing to have three clauses written into his United deal to ensure he would receive a healthy bonus based on United’s success.

As stipulated in the terms of his agreement, Ronaldo will receive £1m if United win the Champions League this season and the striker.

Rangnick’s arrival has seen a gradual shift towards more positive results, although there are still question marks over whether United will finish in the top four.

Yet it remains possible that the Red Devils can claim their first Champions League title since 2008 after twice reaching the final and going on to lose in 2008-09 and 2010-11.

Ralf Rangnick’s men face Atletico Madrid in the last-16 knockout round in February after finishing top of Group F.

And if Ronaldo manages to play a starring role in helping them claim their fourth European crown, it would most likely unlock the two other contract clauses.

“Before was good, winning important things and I wore the shirt before, many years ago, but I am here to win again.

“I am capable, me and my team-mates. I am ready to go, I am ready to go.

“It is a good chance for me, for the supporters, for the club, to get one step ahead.

“I am ready and I think I will be a huge thing in the next three or four years.”
