'Perhaps worse is to come': E10 petrol changes 'taking a hit' on drivers fuel efficiency


The new petrol was introduced at the start of September and aimed to replace the old standard of unleaded, E5. E10 fuel is blended with up to 10 percent bioethanol and is more environmentally friendly than E5.

Around 600,000 cars on UK roads are not compatible with the new fuel, as the Government provides an online checker to see which cars cannot use it.

The cars which cannot use it are advised to use super unleaded or premium petrol, which have higher octane ratings, although they will be more expensive.

Another commenter, Bev G, complained that petrol stations no longer carry E5 petrol anymore.

They said: “This is the problem with my VW Polo. The model and year aren’t compatible with E10.

“They did say it was because the greedy stole the E5 once the E10 was gone and they don’t get as many deliveries of the E5 as the E10.

“I have a car that has E5 and I have to drive five miles to get to fuel I need.

“But to be honest I will stay with E5 as long as I can. It’s better for the car.”

Generally, all cars manufactured after 2011 will be compatible with E10 petrol.

Classic cars, some specific models of cars made from the early 2000s and some mopeds – particularly those under 50cc – will not be compatible with E10.
