Princess Anne was ‘riled’ at thought of Queen Camilla: ‘Wessexes will back her’

Camilla makes first appearance since Queen’s statement

Today, Camilla hosted a reception to celebrate the success of the British equestrian team at last year’s Tokyo Olympics. They managed to bag five medals during the games: two gold, one silver and two bronze. This comes after an unprecedented statement from the Queen at the weekend which said she wants Camilla to be known as Queen Consort when Prince Charles becomes King.

In a message marking the 70th anniversary of her reign, the Queen said it was her “sincere wish” that Camilla would have the title.

While the Duchess appears to have the Queen’s full support, other royals may not be so sure.

Last year, a Palace insider claimed in an interview with New Idea that Anne would never see Camilla as Queen and that the thought of it “riled” her.

They added that Anne “wields a lot of power” and that other members of the Royal Family may back her.

They claimed: “Rumours that Charles may walk back on his promise that Camilla would not be queen has riled Anne to no end, and she’s told both Charles and Camilla as much.

“Anne has made it plain that Camilla will never be a true queen in the eyes of the British subjects.

“Anne wields a lot of power and has a lot of respect in that family, so you will find that the Wessexes, and maybe even the Cambridges, will back her on this.

“Charles and Camilla will face a lot of pushback.”

Penny Junor, a royal expert, also speaking to the publication, said she felt Charles would want Camilla to be known as Queen Consort, something which will now likely be realised following the monarch’s wishes.

She added: “In the past, Camilla was always rather frightened of Anne – she can be very haughty – but I think she has mellowed a little with age, and the relationship is much warmer than it was.”

Anne and Camilla have seldom sung from the same hymn sheet.

The tensions go back to the Seventies, when Anne dated Camilla’s now ex-husband Andrew Parker Bowles, while Camilla was in a relationship with Charles.

Andrew cut things off with Anne, shortly after announcing that he and Camilla had got back together.

The pair went on to marry in 1973 and divorced in 1995, just a year before Charles and Diana, Princess of Wales divorced.

Anne was said to be devastated about her split with Andrew.

She went on to marry Captain Mark Phillips in 1973, the pair divorcing in 1992.

The pair had two children: Peter Phillips and Zara Tindall.

Anne married Sir Timothy Laurence in 1992 — the same year of her divorce from Mark — and the two remain together to this day.

Nevertheless, Anne will likely be keen to see Camilla supporting the British equestrian team today.

The Princess Royal has a long history with horses, having been an eventing champion in the Seventies.

She competed on a number of occasions, winning a gold medal in 1971 and two silver medals in 1975 at the European Eventing Championships, in 1976 becoming the first member of the Royal Family to compete in the Olympics.

Her daughter Zara, who married the former England International Mike Tindall, followed in her mother’s equestrian footsteps and competed in the sport.

Appearing in front of a home crowd at the London 2012 Olympics, she won silver.

She continues to work in equestrian, currently working as a director at Cheltenham Racecourse.
